Meteorology Training
It
is our responsibility to ensure that officers in the Meteorology Branches are
abreast of the latest innovations in the field. We organise a number of courses
aimed at introducing them to complex satellite and forecasting technologies.
The following are courses organised for the Meteorology Department:
- GDOC (Meteorology)
- Initial Forecasters Course
- Junior Forecasters Course
- Senior Forecasters Course
- Satellite Meteorology Course
GDOC (Meteorology)
This course is aimed at officer trainees who have been inducted into the Meteorology Branch. The course introduces them to the fundamentals of weather forecasting. This is followed by the Initial Forecaster Course to demonstrate more complex studies in weather forecasting.
Initial Forecaster Course (IFC)
This training program comprises intensive professional training in analysis and forecasting. The objective of the course is also to impart practical instruction in the issue of flight and local forecasts, weather warning and documentation procedures.
Junior Forecasters Course (JFC)
The objective of this course is to apprise the Meteorology Branch of changing trends in technology. This course trains officers in effective utilisation of satellite imaging to forecast weather phenomenon.
Senior Forecasters Course (SFC)
This course is directed towards officers working as Senior Forecasters. They are trained to undertake Research and Development to explore new and improved possibilities in forecasting techniques.
Satellite Meteorology Course
This training program is designed for officers with expertise in satellite technologies. This course trains officers in effective utilisation of satellite imaging to be able to forecast weather phenomenon in a real-time scenario. The IAF's Meteorology Department has been instrumental in issuing scores of storm and cyclone warnings, which has resulted in timely action to save precious lives and national property.
